Step 1: Research
Just like making any other decision, the first step before deciding on a school for your children is research, and it goes beyond asking a few questions. All the way from checking the school’s social media (if they have Facebook or even Instagram), to going through their website to know their values and what they stand for. Even third-party sites can be helpful.
Step 2: Speak to other parents
Looking for information online is like searching a foggy ocean with a flashlight; there’s only so much you can find. This is why it’s good to get first-hand experience. Speak to other parents in your community and intended location. If you’re yet to decide on a location, the last step will definitely help.
Step 3: Ask the opinion of your kids
It would be a bad idea if you were cooking a dish and asked the mailman, gardener, and every other person about their food preference aside from the actual person eating the dish. Consulting your children helps you get an image or idea about the type of school they’d actually want (maybe painted in their favorite color), just to make them feel they had an input.
Step 4: Budgeting

Many parents get this wrong by only checking the school fees, but other details matter too, such as books, how often fees are increased, and any other hidden charges. Also consider the transport fee if it’s far from where you live.
Step 5: Knowing the location
You’d also want to visit the school physically and survey the area to see the facilities close by. If it’s close to a hospital or police station, that’s a bonus point. If the area looks too sketchy or unsafe, you might want to reconsider for the sake of your children.
